CLUBHISTORY
The Shoalhaven Greyhound Racing Club commenced racing on the 30th January, 1976after the area nurtured a number of leading greyhounds in the area since the 1930's. Until this time, local trainer's had to travel hundreds of kilometers per week to race their greyhounds, even if it meant that the trainers would pool their petrol coupons in time of rationing so as to race their beloved animals.
The inaugural meeting of
the Club was on the 30th July, 1971 where approximately 60people were in
attendance. The Club was formed with Mr. Brian Aulsebrook elected as President.
Starting with a bank account of $276as of August 1972, the Club succeeded in
lobbying the Shoalhaven Council for the securement of land at
In September, 1973the
Shoalhaven City Council granted the Club a $20,000 loan for the construction of
an amenities and kenneling block. Volunteers within the club devoted many hours
in assisting with the development of the club’s facilities. The
acquisition of a racing license took a number of years as licenses were keenly
sought by a number of areas within
Development of the club continued in a similar vein with volunteer labor and raceday staffing. Racing was conducted primarily on Friday or Saturday evenings. In 1990 the Club commenced racing on Tuesday evenings with TAB coverage.
In July 1999 the Club was granted a $160,000 commercial loan from the Shoalhaven City Council for the development of an all-weather loam racing surface. The Club contributed another $28,000 for additional construction costs and associated equipment and the development was completed by Cato Constructions in September 1999. The track has been commented upon by leading trainers as of a world class standard with interference free racing commonplace.
Below are a number of photographs depicting the former grass track, during development and the finished all-weather loam racing surface:

The development of the new track in September 1999 coincided with the Club volunteering to move its racing time to the Monday twilight period. The combination of SKY Racing, SKY Channel, 2KY Radio and TAB coverage has allowed this period to become immensely popular with the wagering public as off-course turnover increased by a substantial amount on the Nowra race meeting.

Summarized Annual Report: 1998-99 Financial Year
The 1998-99 year was a difficult period in the club's history as it was elevated from the Country Club pool to the TAB Club's pool without significant funding assistance to compete in the strong Southern Zone (NSW) of racing. The Club also committed funding to the development of a world-class racing surface with the assistance of the Shoalhaven City Council and the NSW Greyhound Racing Authority. During this period, the Club also volunteered for the move from Tuesday night racing to the Monday twilight period.
As a result of these actions, the Shoalhaven Greyhound Racing Club reported a profit of $12,351 for the 1998-99financial year. This profit was reduced due to the full inclusion of borrowings from the Shoalhaven City Council for the loam track development and the substantial amortization of plant and equipment.
The twilight period has had a negative impact upon course admission fees and bar sales however the Club has offset this impact in several other areas. Growth of 50% in sponsorship income was attained while on-course turnover has increased by almost $1 million. The Club's off-course turnover was an increase of almost 36% to the previous year which can be attributed to the popular twilight period and the higher quality of greyhound competing at the new loam track. Prize money has also grown by over20% and the Club is committed to the continued growth of graded prizemoney in the next 12 months.
It is expected that the Club will continue trading profitably for the 1999-00 year and precautions are being taken by the Club for the projected impact by the Y2K problem as well as the Goods and Services Tax.
The board of directors continues to monitor business opportunities that will achieve revenue growth in the medium to long term and we feel certain that the new millennium will be prosperous for the Shoalhaven Greyhound Racing Club.
